“A keyword, in the context of search engine optimization, is a particular word or phrase that describes the contents of a Web page. Keywords are intended to act as shortcuts that sum up an entire page. Keywords form part of a Web page’s metadata and help search engines match a page to with an appropriate search query.”

What Are Keywords For?

Keywords are used to find what you’re looking or on search engines, like Google.

For example, let’s suppose you’re looking for a place to eat, you’re in Tucson, AZ and you prefer Chinese food. If you go to Google and enter

Chinese restaurant Tucson

You will get back search results for all the Chinese restaurant Websites in Tucson that are using the Chinese restaurant keyword. Clicking any link on the Google search results will get you more detailed information for that specific Chinese restaurant.

Now for the bad news. YOU MUST GET ON PAGE 1 OF GOOGLE TO GET TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE. Almost nobody ever looks at page 2 of Google, or any other search engine.

Never Try To Rank For Single Word Keywords

There are only 10 positions on page 1 of Google and one of the MAJOR considerations to getting on page 1 of Google is how many competing Web pages are also using your keyword. It stands to reason then that the more competition you have for a page 1 position, the less likely you are to get it.

An example might be a business that sells printed golf shirts in Myrtle Beach, SC. If they choose just “golf” as a keyword, they’ll be competing against 843,000,000 other Web pages for one of those 10 spots on page 1 of Google.

If they choose “golf shirts”, it gets better, but not good. Now they only have 19,800,000 competing Web pages now.

If they change to “printed golf shirts”, it gets even better. Now they have 3,810,000 competing Web pages,  but that’s still a LOT of competition for just 10 spots on page 1 of Google.

OK, let’s get really specific. Let’s try “printed golf shirts Myrtle Beach”. That is much more like it. Now we have just 194,000 competing Web pages.

Long Tail Keywords Are Always Best

A long tail keyword is simply a keyword containing more than one word. As we have seen, the longer the keyword is, and the more descriptive it is, the fewer the number of competing Web pages.

Be careful of the Law Of Diminishing Returns though. If you get TOO specific, you may also get no traffic to your Website, even though you rank #1 on page 1 of Google. If, for example, you use “printed golf shirts in Myrtle Beach colored blue and with a pocket”, you’ll see Google telling you that there are 82,000 competing Web pages for that term. NOT TRUE!

Go to any one of the Web pages listed and you will NOT see the keyword. Google has a tendency to show RELATED pages on search results, if there are no exact keyword matches. If you get too specific with your keyword, you will be back to no traffic again.

How To Find Great Keywords

Our suggestion has a 1 word suggestion. Don’t.

Keywords send traffic to your Web page. Great keywords send LOTS of traffic to your Web page. If you are NOT experienced with keyword research we strongly suggest that you do NOT do this yourself.

However, if you are determined to give it a try, then the Google AdWords Keyword Tool is a good place to start. You must have a Google account to use it, and the Google accounts are free.

When you entire a generic search idea, the Google AdWords Keyword Tool returns a list of keywords relating to what you entered. It also shows you the monthly search volume for those keywords in two categories; Global and Local.

Do NOT make an invalid assumption here. Googe is a global company, so the “Global” value is the number of searches world-wide. “Local” does NOT mean “your city”. It means “your country”.

So, how do you know how many people search for your chosen keyword in your city every month? The short answer is, “you don’t”. Put in your favorite keyword along with your city, like “blue widget Jacksonville”. The tool, quite often, will show your keyword and “—‘ for the number of searches. Google is not saying that there are NO searches. It is saying the searches are not being tracked.

If there IS a number of searches displayed, be aware that it is a mathematical calculation and may not be even close to the actual number of searches.

Think about that for a moment. How many servers would you need to store every possible keyword search for every city, town, village and hamlet worldwide? Too many.

Always be wary of “the illusion of precision”. Even the number of competing Web pages Google displays for a keyword isn’t real. Go to the last Google page for that keyword search and see how many positions on that page are even remotely related to your keyword.

Rule of thumb. The keywords that are listed in the USA as the highest searched keywords are probably the highest searched keywords in your city, or reasonably close.

We do not allow our customers to choose their own keywords. In order to get the maximum traffic to their Website, we find the most searched for keywords in their niche and rank them for those.

Remember: We NEVER will touch your Web pages. Sprinkling keywords around a Web page doesn’t work very well and is, basically, a waste of time, While your competitors are wasting 3 to 4 months trying to get 1 or 2 keywords on page 1 of Google, you will have at last FIFTEEN high-competition keywords already on page 1 of Google generating MASSIVE traffic to your website.

Is FIFTEEN Keywords On Page 1 Of Google Wishful Thinking?

If you deal with the other SEO companies, the answer is going to be “yes”. Those of you that have had experience with “optimizing” your Web pages by adding keywords here and there are well aware of how “hit and miss” it is. Typically, you wait (and pay for) 3 to 4 months and nothing shows up. If you get lucky and get on page 1 of Google, your listing usually disappears after a short time. The reason is Google did an update of their ranking formula and your listing no longer qualified.

We’re the DIFFERENT search engine ranking company. We get you at least FIFTEEN high-competition keywords (depending on your chosen plan) on page 1 of Google BEFORE you pay ANYTHING. You have MASSIVE traffic arriving at your website from day 1, and it keeps getting better as we do our every 2-3 day keyword promotion and posting to over SIXTEEN top social sites each time for you.

FACT: The more high competition keywords that you have on page 1 of Google, the more traffic will come to your Website. We will send MASSIVE traffic to your Website.

We never trick Google and ALWAYS use “white hat” techniques. We are the top 3 in New York City for this keyword, with over 1 million competing Web pages.
